Medical face mask for protection against infectious germs (e.g. bacteria or viruses). The transmission of infectious germs during surgical procedures in operating theatres and other medical facilities can occur in several ways. Sources of infection include the noses and mouths of surgical team members. The primary intended use of medical face masks is to protect the patient against infectious germs and, additionally in certain situations, to protect the wearer against splashes of potentially contaminated fluids. Medical face masks may also be used to be worn by patients and others to reduce the risk of spreading infections, particularly in epidemic or pandemic situations.

Special instructions for use (for SARS, COVID-19, etc.)

The crisis management team of the Federal Government announced a new reuse procedure for medical face masks in exceptional cases (only for Germany) on 31.03.2020: For the reprocessing of medical face masks, decontamination by heat inactivation is recommended, for example by means of dry heat at 65-70 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes. Reuse of masks without decontamination is possible when used for the protection of others in the daily routine of wards, outpatient clinics or care facilities. However, this requires personalised use! In principle, masks cannot be reused for operations in the operating theatre or for interventional procedures! The measures for the reprocessing of masks presented by the crisis management team of the Federal Government are limited to a maximum of 6 months (as of 31.03.2020).
